Andy Gibb

1975-11-xx. Words and music (sencillo)

A WORDS AND MUSIC
B WESTFIELD MANSIONS

The first record release by Andy Gibb. It was never reissued on LP or CD. The song ‘Words and Music’ was recorded again for his first album Flowing Rivers.

1977-05-xx. I just want to be your everything (sencillo)

A I JUST WANT TO BE YOUR EVERYTHING
B IN THE END

Barry wrote, produced, and sang backup on ‘I Just Want to Be Your Everything’. This was Andy’s first single released outside Australia (and his second single there).

CD: Both on Flowing Rivers.

1977-09-xx. Flowing Rivers (1° álbum)

1.          "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" (Barry Gibb) - 3:45
2.          "Words and Music" (Andy Gibb) - 4:38
3.          "Dance to the Light of the Morning" (Andy Gibb) - 3:19
4.          "Too Many Looks in Your Eyes" (Andy Gibb) - 4:10
5.          "Starlight" (Andy Gibb) - 3:32
6.          "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water" (Barry Gibb, Andy Gibb) - 4:15
7.          "Flowing Rivers" (Andy Gibb) - 3:37
8.          "Come Home for the Winter" (Andy Gibb) - 4:05
9.          "Let It Be Me" (Andy Gibb) - 3:30
10.       "In the End" (Andy Gibb) - 3:16

The first Andy Gibb album was finally issued almost a year after it was recorded, carefully spaced between Bee Gees releases. Andy wrote eight of the ten songs, and Barry contributed the other two. The songs were good, and Andy’s youth and good looks didn’t hurt. Andy was very suddenly very big in America, where both of the singles hit number 1. Unfortunately the ill effects of what Barry calls ‘first fame’ had already claimed him by now.
CD: All on Flowing Rivers.

1977-09. Thicker than water (sencillo)

A (LOVE IS) THICKER THAN WATER
B FLOWING RIVERS

Andy’s second single in Britain did nothing. Release was held off in America as part of an RSO strategy that started to appear late this year.

CD: Both on Flowing Rivers.

Andy Gibb : single
US: RSO, November 1977
A (LOVE IS) THICKER THAN WATER
B WORDS AND MUSIC
Andy’s second single in America followed the first one to number 1.

1978-04-xx. Shadow dancing (sencillo)

A SHADOW DANCING
B LET IT BE ME

CD: ‘Shadow Dancing’ on Andy Gibb and Andy Gibb Millennium.

1978-04-xx. Shadow dancing (album)

A 1 SHADOW DANCING
A 2 WHY
A 3 FOOL FOR A NIGHT
A 4 AN EVERLASTING LOVE
A 5 (OUR LOVE) DON’T THROW IT ALL AWAY
B 1 ONE MORE LOOK AT THE NIGHT
B 2 MELODY
B 3 I GO FOR YOU
B 4 GOOD FEELING
B 5 WAITING FOR YOU

Andy Gibb’s second album was hugely successful in the marketplace. Musically it continued the uneasy juxtaposition of Barry’s hit songs for Andy and Andy’s own songs, the latter confined mostly to side 2 of the LP. All are again played to a polish by the best session players Barry, Albhy, and Karl could hire.

American release was considerably in advance of that elsewhere, and the next several Andy singles were quite different.

CD: ‘Shadow Dancing’, ‘An Everlasting Love’, and ‘(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away’ on Andy Gibb and Andy Gibb Millennium.

1978-04-xx. Shadow dancing (sencillo)

A SHADOW DANCING
B To many looks in your eyes

CD: ‘Shadow Dancing’ on Andy Gibb and Andy Gibb Millennium.

1978-06-xx. An everlasting love (sencillo)

A AN EVERLASTING LOVE
B FLOWING RIVERS

Andy’s fourth American single did not reach number 1 like the first three, but did go top five. Barry sings backing vocals. The B side was again off his first album, not the new one.

CD: ‘An Everlasting Love’ on Andy Gibb; both on Andy Gibb Millennium

1978-09-xx. Don’t throw it all away (sencillo)

A (OUR LOVE) DON’T THROW IT ALL AWAY
B ONE MORE LOOK AT THE NIGHT

1978-09-xx. Why (sencillo)

A WHY
B ONE MORE LOOK AT THE NIGHT

1978-09-xx. Why (sencillo)

A WHY
B FOOL FOR A NIGHT

Different singles for the American and British markets. The two US singles have consecutive catalog numbers and the same B side, as if ‘Why’ was a quick replacement for ‘(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away’— although ‘(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away’ was in fact the American hit. Barry on backing vocals on ‘(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away’.

CD: ‘(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away’ on Andy Gibb and Andy Gibb Millennium

1980-01-xx. Desire (sencillo)

A DESIRE
B WAITING FOR YOU (1978)

1980-01-xx. After dark (album)

1.          "After Dark" (B. Gibb) - 4:17
2.          "Desire" (B. Gibb, M. Gibb, R. Gibb) - 4:26
3.          "Wherever You Are" (B. Gibb) - 4:27
4.          "Warm Ride" (B. Gibb, M. Gibb, R. Gibb) - 3:30
5.          "Rest Your Love on Me" (Duet with Olivia Newton-John) (B. Gibb) - 4:53
6.          "I Can't Help It" (Duet with Olivia Newton-John) (B. Gibb) - 4:07
7.          "One Love" (A. Gibb, B. Gibb) - 4:06
8.          "Someone I Ain't" (A. Gibb, B. Gibb) - 3:08
9.          "Falling in Love with You" (Galuten, B. Gibb) - 4:12
10.       "Dreamin' On" (B. Gibb) - 3:51

The last Andy Gibb album, and his last top ten single in America. Fame is fleeting. The B side was from his previous album. Barry on vocals and guitar. Robin and Maurice also sing on ‘Desire’.

CD: ‘Desire’, ‘After Dark’ ‘I Can’t Help It’ on Andy Gibb and Andy Gibb Mlllenium Collection.

1980-03-xx. I can’t help it (sencillo)

A I CAN’T HELP IT
B SOMEONE I AIN’T

This missed the top ten in America. Andy Gibb was no longer an automatic success.
CD: ‘I Can’t Help It’ on Andy Gibb and Andy Gibb Mlllenium Collection.

1980-09-xx. Andy Gibb’s Greatest Hits

A 1 I JUST WANT TO BE YOUR EVERYTHING (1977)
A 2 (LOVE IS) THICKER THAN WATER (1977)
A 3 SHADOW DANCING (1978)
A 4 AN EVERLASTING LOVE (1978)
A 5 (OUR LOVE) DONT’T THROW IT ALL AWAY (1978)
B 1 TIME IS TIME
B 2 ME (WITHOUT YOU)
B 3 WILL YOU LOVE ME TOMORROW
B 4 AFTER DARK (1980)
B 5 DESIRE (1980)

Andy Gibb’s Greatest Hits summed up his American career in seven songs, plus three new ones at the start of side 2. As a review of his career to date it would have been informative to include his Australian single of ‘Words and Music’ and a couple of his own compositions like ‘Flowing Rivers’, rather than a pointless cover of ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’.
CD: All on Andy Gibb Millennium Collection. All but ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’ on Andy Gibb.

1980-11-xx. Time is time (sencillo)

A TIME IS TIME
B I GO FOR YOU (1978)

Sales and quality are different things. ‘Time is Time’ is one of Andy’s best records, and it did make top twenty in the US, but even so it sold far less than his previous releases. Releasing it before the album might have helped. The B side was yet again from the Shadow Dancing album, not either of the 1980 albums.

CD: ‘Time is Time’ on Andy Gibb, but faded early at 3:41, and complete on Andy Gibb Millennium Collection. ‘I Go for You’ on Shadow Dancing.

1981-02-xx. Me (sencillo)

A ME (WITHOUT YOU)
B MELODY (1978)

A second single off Andy Gibb’s Greatest Hits. Barry on backing vocals on ‘Me’. The B side is yet again from Shadow Dancing. Number 40 in Billboard, nothing in Britain.
CD: ‘Me’ on Andy Gibb and Andy Gibb Millennium Collection. ‘Melody’ on Shadow Dancing.

1981-02-xx. All I have to do is dream (sencillo)

A ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM (con Vicitoria Principal)
B GOOD FEELING (1978)

Andy’s last single. Some fans and others were scandalized at his love affair with a woman twelve years older than him. ‘All I Have to Do Is Dream’ was talked about and mocked, but rarely played. As if to blot out the memory, it has never been reissued on any LP or CD. For all that it is not dreadfully bad, just nothing special musically.

The B side was incredibly yet another song from Shadow Dancing, and with this, all ten songs had appeared on singles in the US or UK.

CD: ‘Good Feeling’ on Shadow Dancing.

1991-04-xx. Andy Gibb

01 MAN ON FIRE
02 I JUST WANT TO BE YOUR EVERYTHING (1977)
03 (LOVE IS) THICKER THAN WATER (1977)
04 FLOWING RIVERS (1977)
05 SHADOW DANCING (1978)
06 AN EVERLASTING LOVE (1978)
07 (OUR LOVE) DON’T THROW IT ALL AWAY (1978)
08 DESIRE (1980)
09 AFTER DARK (1980)
10 I CAN’T HELP IT (1980)
11 TIME IS TIME (1980)
12 ME (WITHOUT YOU) (1980)

This album called just Andy Gibb was the first CD release of any of his recordings. It started off with the previously unreleased ‘Man on Fire’ from Andy’s last recording sessions in 1987. Otherwise it runs through his hits and a few album tracks in order of original appearance. Compared to the LP Andy Gibb’s Greatest Hits it has the welcome additions of ‘Flowing Rivers’ and ‘I Can’t Help It’ and drops the unnecessary cover of ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’. His first single, the Australian release ‘Words and Music’, is missing as usual, and so is his last, the duet with Victoria Principal.

Andy Gibb Millennium
US: Universal, August 2001; UK: Polydor, August 2001
01 I JUST WANT TO BE YOUR EVERYTHING (1977)
02 (LOVE IS) THICKER THAN WATER (1977)
03 SHADOW DANCING (1978)
04 AN EVERLASTING LOVE (1978)
05 (OUR LOVE) DON’T THROW IT ALL AWAY (1978)
06 AFTER DARK (1980)
07 DESIRE (1980)
08 I CAN’T HELP IT (1980)
09 TIME IS TIME (1980)
10 ME (WITHOUT YOU) (1980)
11 WILL YOU LOVE ME TOMORROW (1980)

Andy Gibb Millennium is the same as the 1980 LP Andy Gibb’s Greatest Hits but for the addition of ‘I Can’t Help It’ and a reshuffle of playing order in the second half. It disappointed fans who hoped for something new, or at least all of the singles. Small favors are the first CD appearances of the P P Arnold duet ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’ and of ‘Time Is Time’ without the fadeout it had on the CD Andy Gibb.
